Gabtastik and digsby let you keep Facebook chat sessions open on your Windows desktop outside of your regular web browser, using minimal screen real estate and system memory.

But  Facebook is now officially out with its own messenger client for Windows 7.
The Facebook messenger client looks almost the same as the chat box on Facebook’s site. Users can either permanently keep the chat window on their home screen or access it from the Windows system tray.

Whenever friends want to chat, a notification would be sent to the user. Friend activity is also displayed on the client, though clicking on it will redirect you to the respective web page. Similar process is followed for the messages in your Facebook inbox.

The chat bar is a concentrated feature and does not allow full access to the site. So, you can accept pending friend requests but in case you want to search for new friends or check profiles you’ll need to go to Facebook’s site. Video calling or voice calling is also not an available feature for the messenger client yet. Facebook says the chat bar is a trial application so updates and changes are expected.
