New Twilight Takes $139.5-million Bite Out Of Box Office

The last Twilight was more gleaming, but The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1 shone brightly in its own right as it led the weekend box office with $139.5 million. The figure was above the conservative predictions of Summit Entertainment, the studio that produces the Twilight movies, but below the estimates of several pundits who had forecast that it would earn $140-150 million. The last Twilight installment, Eclipse debuted on a Wednesday with $157.6 million, the franchise’s biggest opening. The previous installment, New Moon, opened with $142.8 million, its biggest three-day take. Overseas, Breaking Dawn raked in an additional $144 million, bringing its international total for the weekend to a sensational $283.5 million. Dancing in second was Warner Bros.’ 3D animated Happy Feet Two, but it had little spring in its step as it premiered with just $22.5 million. The original Happy Feet movie) earned $41.5 million on its opening weekend — without the benefit of 3D surcharges. Coming in third was last week’s box-office winner, Immortals, which chalked up $12.3 million in ticket sales. Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill landed a notch below with $12 million, according to studio estimataes, while Puss in Boots slid to fifth place with $7 million. In something of a surprise, the George Clooney starrer The Descendents, expanded to $29 theaters where it earned a total of $1.2 million in 29 theaters, on an average of $42,150 per theater. By contrast, Breaking Dawn brought in $34,351 per theater.
